I grew up just minutes from Washington, D.C. in uber historic Alexandria, Virginia. My Dad was a sage master craftsman who painstakingly restored countless Old Towne Alexandria homes, down to the fastidious application of gold leaf on the plaques that bore each home’s historic status. I love to brag that not many daughters get to tag along for the remodel of the Marquis de Lafayette house. My Mother should have headed Chanel, as she could fashion even the most complicated garment, with ease (but still let me wear bellbottoms).
I bought my first Monet print from the National Gallery of Art in third grade, and every Sunday, I devoured Nina Hyde’s Fashion Notes from the Washington Post. I wanted to attend design school in New York, but for a tender 18-year old with wanderlust, it wasn’t to be. And so I became a journalist. Now I get to document the world I love. Many miles, countries, and coasts later, I am a gleeful amalgamation of fresh and free California style.
